This past weekend USA Softball of SD host it's annual Umpire School and Clinic at St Thomas More School in Rapid City. Steve Riswold of Sioux Falls and Jimmy Derrick of Atlanta, Georgia were the instructors with help from the South Deputy Umpires.
With 30 plus umpires in attendance for the weekend, they accomplished a lot of both classroom and hands-on instruction in both fastpitch and slowpitch.
There was time spent in the St Thomas More gym working base & plate mechanics, positioning, and verbal training. Umpires in attendance were from all corners of SD as well as Wisconsin and Wyoming.
It is yearly clinics such as this one as well as the local clinics that in your local clinics that is the reason that SD has some of the better-trained umpires in the nation. Steve and his crew do a great job of training.
We always hope that these clinics are better attended every year, but also know that weekends are busy. As an umpire, in the future plan on attending one of this events. I think I went to my first one in the late 70's and I learn something new every time I attend. With umpire styles evolving and the national staff working hard on ways to improve working umpires, it is worth the time.
Also on Saturday, we had a roundtable with the local leagues in the Hills area. Not a huge crowd but we did cover a lot of subjects, both informational and Q&A. This is something we want to continue around the state. We feel that it is just as beneficial to the USA Softball SD board members as it is the teams that play the game. Afterwards, those in attendance stopped at the Umpire Clinic for a few minutes. For those who came, thank you!
Those in attendance from the state board was Women's Deputy Stacey Morell, Player Rep Keith Morell, Men's Area Deputy Mike Miles, Co-ed Deputy Kyle Beaird, Adult Fastpitch Travis Young, Youth Carol Pipgras, Commissioner Emeritus Bill Maher, and Commissioner Young. UIC Steve Riswold and Jimmy Derrick stopped in.
