Larry D. McCullough, 58, of Brookings, SD passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at Avera Heart Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD. Private family Funeral Services have been set for 10:30am Tuesday, February 16, 2021. The funeral service will be streamed live on First Lutheran Brookings Facebook page and Rude’s Funeral Home Facebook page. Public Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Monday, February 15, 2021 at Gracepoint Wesleyan Church, Brookings, SD. The family asks that those coming to the visitation wear their softball jerseys in honor of Larry. Masks are required at both the funeral and visitation. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Larry D. McCullough was born on April 24, 1962 in Spokane, WA, his parents were Ronald Lee and Jacqueline (Huntzinger) McCullough. He grew up and attended school in Toronto, SD. He graduated from Duebrook High School in 1980.
After graduating, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served his Basic Training at Fort Sill, OK, he then was stationed at Fort Collins, CO. he then was transferred and stationed at Baumholder, Germany for two years. He was then transferred and stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, before he was honorably discharged in 1985.
During his time in the service, Larry was united in marriage to the love of his life, Darla May Johnson on May 29, 1982 in Estelline, SD.
While they were in Germany, they had their 1st son, Christopher, their 2nd son JD was born while they were stationed in Washington and after returning to South Dakota their 3rd son, Caleb was born.
They lived in Toronto, SD for a short time before moving to Brookings, SD where they made their home. He started building grain bins in 1977, prior to serving in the Army and ended his career with Mills Construction.
Larry enjoyed fishing, softball, growing watermelon, gardening and fishing with his grandson, James. He also enjoyed woodworking, camping and was occasionally know to sip on a Bud Light.
Larry is survived by his wife, Darla McCullough of Brookings, SD; sons, Christopher Dean (Jessica) McCullough of Brookings, SD, Justin Dean McCullough of Brookings, SD and Caleb Dean McCullough of Brookings, SD; his mother, Jackie McCullough of Platte, SD; a sister, Kimberly (Floyd) Pesicka of Platte, SD; a brother, Ronnie Lee (Donna) McCullough Jr. of Platte, SD; grandson, James Dean McCullough of Brookings, SD; mother-in-law, Eileen Johnson of Brookings, SD; three brothers-in-law, Clifford Johnson of Sioux Falls, SD; Steve (Lorri) Johnson of Humboldt, SD and Lynn Johnson of Brookings, SD, along with many nieces and nephews.
Larry was preceded in death by his father, Ronald McCullough; father-in-law, Carllyle Johnson; grandparents, Russell and Edna McCullough, Millard and Grace Huntzinger and Lillian and Orville Hanson.
